Let the Games Begin

Guest post by Bryn Huntpalmer, editor for Modernize and Her Own Wings

They call it March Madness for a reason folks! The college basketball tournament that takes place each March/April is chaotic and can easily overrun your house if you have an avid sports fan living under your roof. Luckily there are ways to incorporate the fun of the tournament without making it the sole focus of your living space.

Utilize a Swivel TV Mount

OmniMount OC80FM

Being able to turn the TV to one area of the room (and maybe even put it on mute!) can allow other conversations to take place in other areas. Consider rearranging your furniture to create two distinct living spaces. You can always move it back when the madness dies down.

Create a Man Cave

While you may not want a permanent man cave in your house (or maybe you do!), you can create an awesome temporary viewing space for friends during the excitement of March Madness. It doesn’t need to be fancy, we recommend moving a TV into the garage and setting up lawn chairs and a cooler for drinks of course! The room pictured here has two TV’s which would be perfect for watching multiple games at the same time.

Take it Outside

At Modernize we are obsessed with outdoor entertainment spaces and the ruckus that comes along with March Madness can certainly be better accommodated outdoors. While this may require a little more planning and probably more money, you can create a space that you will enjoy many months of the year, not just during sports season!

Hopefully these ideas have given you the inspiration necessary to take the plunge and plan a party around all of the craziness this Spring. And whether you’re an avid basketball fan or not, be sure to check out OmniMount’s #BeattheBrackets promotion for your chance to win the OC80FM mount pictured above! Let the games begin!

How to Keep Technology From Taking Over Your Space

Guest post by Bryn Huntpalmer, editor for Modernize and Her Own WingsTips to hide your TVThese days most families have a TV in their living room but many parents are also becoming more and more conscientious of how much screen time their children are getting. A great compromise is to incorporate a television in a way that doesn’t make it the center of attention.

Ditch the Entertainment Center

Entertainment Centers are bulky, unnecessary and have a tendency to make the television the center of attention in a living space. So ditch that oversized cabinet and replace it with a wall mounted solution. Create a gallery wall by adding your personal touches around the TV to keep the eye from focusing on a television that is powered off.

Hide the TV

There are so many clever ways to hide your television these days. Options range from hidden compartments in the wall, mirrors, paintings or even mock shutters.

Rearrange the Space

When deciding where to put your furniture feel free to step outside of the box and create a setup that doesn’t center around the television. A great way to accommodate this type of set-up is to mount your TV on a swivel mount so the television can adjust to the furniture rather than the furniture accommodating the TV.

The Best Ways to Incorporate Technology Safely Into Your Home

Guest blog by Bryn Huntpalmer, editor for Modernize and Her Own Wings

When you first have a baby you are overwhelmed with all of the baby-proofing products on the market and likely you are still reeling from months of sleep deprivation and just want a quick fix. You go out and buy some outlet protectors and cabinet door locks and call it a day, right? Unfortunately, many of us overlook the potential danger of top heavy furniture or electronics falling on our little ones and when we hear the terrible tragedies of babies being crushed under a bookcase, we think “that would never happen to MY baby because I never let him out of my sight.” But, as your own mother always told you, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

“I urge parents to anchor their TVs, furniture and appliances and protect their children,” say Inez Tenebaum, Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. “It takes just a few minutes to do and it can save lives.”

Mount your TV

Install a product like the OE120IW, an in-wall television mount, for a discrete way to suspend a flat-screen TV on the wall and protect it against accidental bumps and tips. When not in use, the television can display a painting image or YouTube hearth fire video. When in use, the TV can swivel, extend and tilt, making the mount ideal for interactive games or for homemakers who habitually rearrange the furniture.

As long as you are making some tech upgrades in your home, consider some home automation options that take home security to the next level! Consider the Nest Protect, which senses smoke, detects carbon dioxide, monitors its own batteries, and sends text notifications. VuPoint sells a temperature-sensitive faucet light that glows blue when the water is cold, red when warm. Glass breakage sensors, infrared security cameras, “smart” power strips, LED multi-colored light bulbs that play music, digital kitchen splashes – all of these are actual products that you can install in your home.

Mount your iPad

iPad_Case_and_Stand_LS_5But not everyone has the deep pockets for a digital kitchen backsplash. Why not read recipes, play music or video chat during dinner preparation using your iPad or Android tablet? Place it on a 3-in-1 stand or wall mount to isolate it from countertop spills and curious children.

Mount your computer

Do you experience back and neck pain from sitting at a computer by day and bouncing a baby on your hip by night? Thankfully, the solution is as simple as a sit-stand computer mount. Recommended by the American Medical Association, sit-stand desks and computer mounts move up and down, allowing you to sit for an hour, stand for the next, and never lose a minute’s productivity. These are also really handy for when your baby starts to walk (and climb!) so that you can raise the computer safely out of their reach.

Integrating technology into the home should not require the sacrifice of space, safety or control. On the contrary, a TV, iPad or computer mount will provide you, the homeowner, with more authority and security. Plus as you pull yourself out of the trenches of toddlerhood and your chubby-cheeked kid turns into a gangly teenager you will surely be the coolest parent on the block with your high-tech home!

Super Bowl Safety Check

Game Time - PLAY25XIf you’re anywhere near as excited for the Super Bowl as we are in Phoenix, chances are you’re planning something fun. Whether the day calls for watching the game with family, out at a bar or over at the neighbor’s, now is a great time to assess the needs of your own home theater, and in particular, your TV mount (or lack thereof). TVs in crowded rooms, especially those with kids and pets, can pose a potential tip hazard. Mounting a large TV to the wall with a UL certified TV mount is the best way to prevent accidental tip-overs, plus, a mount can actually improve the viewing location and angle of the TV, making for an all-around better viewing experience!

So if you haven’t done so, assess the safety of your home theater setup and make sure you’re ready for game day. Have questions? Smart Home Dedicated to SFC Michael Schlitz

Last week the Gary Sinise Foundation dedicated a home to SFC Michael Schlitz, a veteran wounded in Iraq. In 2007, Schlitz was doing a basic road clearing mission in Baghdad when two artillery shells attached to a propane tank went off, resulting in life-threatening burns and the loss of both arms. The home will be used by Michael and his mother, his primary caretaker, giving them both greater independence. Photos from the ceremony can be viewed on the Gary Sinise Foundation Facebook page and you can read more about and foundation and OmniMount’s involvement on this earlier blog. For a look at the OmniMount TV mounts and AV racks used in Michael’s home visit OmniMount’s Facebook page.
