Have you heard about National Get Fit Don’t Sit Day? No? This is the first year for this fun event, sponsored by the American Diabetes Association (ADA), and just around the corner, on May 6th!
OmniMount and its partner brands, Ergotron and Anthro, are celebrating this fun day at work — and at home. We’re supporting the ADA for this inaugural event and would like to challenge everyone to get up and move at least every 90 minutes throughout the day.
Regular activity is good for everyone’s health – it can improve muscular fitness, bone and heart health, and lower risk for the three leading causes of death: heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and some cancers.
A fun home workout can help you decompress from work – which is often exclusively sedentary says JustStand.org – and inspire your family and friends to be more active, too.
National Get Fit Don’t Sit Day is a great time to spread the word about the benefits of exercise, sports, and movement.
Want examples? Here is how some of our employees will celebrate on May 6th:
I have an 8-year old who can barely concentrate on her homework because she fidgets so much. I get it…she’s been sitting the majority of the day at school so asking her to sit and do her homework is really challenging. We talked one night about what would help her focus more and we came up with the idea to let her do her daily reading while she uses my mini-stair stepper. This not only helps her concentrate but it gets some of that energy out that she’s had to hold in all day.
Melissa Gasser, Marketing Project Lead, Anthro Corporation
Since I sit-stand all day at work I consider that a couple hours watching TV isn’t so bad but I never sit for more than 30 minutes at a time. In fact, it turns out to be less than that because I use commercial breaks as a chance to putz around the house doing household tasks. I might sweep the floor, dust some furniture, let the dogs outside (and back inside), empty the dishwasher, sort the recycling or clean the bathroom mirror. It’s amazing how much you can do in the time it would have taken to watch 4 TV ads.
Carrie Schmitz, Sr. Manager of Ergonomic & Wellness Research, Ergotron
Since I’m big into sports I love to plan going to the gym if there’s a game, especially a soccer game that I want to watch on TV. I do this because at my gym we have TV’s that will play the game and instead of sitting down and pigging out on food I get a little bit of exercise while I still get to watch the game. While you’re working out you mentally get yourself into the game, but at the same time your legs are moving and you’re being active.
Matt Scott, Marketing Assistant, Anthro Corporation
I catch up on my DVR’d shows while I work out on the elliptical or while I prep and cook. Then, I’ll sometimes do strength training and yoga workouts while watching TV with my husband.
Alysia Miller, Graphic Designer, OmniMount
I try to start each day with a little bit of activity, whether it’s doing a short exercise video or some push-ups. In the evenings I like to walk to the grocery store for dinner supplies. On a regular basis, I stand at the kitchen countertop to eat rather than sitting down at the dining room table.
Betsey Banker, Communications & PR Manager, Ergotron & OmniMount
