CE Pro’s Bob Archer recently published an article about women in the consumer electronics industry. It’s no secret that men still comprise much of the custom CE channel but his article takes a look at how the industry is being influenced by the women in it.
I feel very lucky to work for a company that clearly values the role of women. I’ve had the privilege to work with and for female marketing leaders at the Managerial, Director, CMO and VP levels, not to mention many female colleagues in all aspects of the business. Ergotron, OmniMount’s parent company, has an executive leadership board that’s comprised almost 50% of women.
And it’s a good thing, too. As technology gets integrated into more common areas of the household, like the family room, kitchen and bedroom, women are taking more interest in the way it gets displayed. Creating a product that solves a functional need isn’t enough – it needs to address important style and aesthetics concerns as well. When women have a voice in product development, engineering and marketing, it’s much easier to meet the needs of female buyers.
When Pete Segar, CEO of Ergotron, read Bob’s article his response was immediate. “My take on hiring women is that as long as you always choose the best candidate for the job, you will end up with women highly represented.” He went on to tell this story about Bill Gates and to emphasize that “I can now say that I am no longer trying to move the needle, I am benefitting.”
