Improve Screen Time, Reduce Childhood Obesity

Last week the Huffington Post shared an infographic: This is your teen on screens. In one of the surprising stats, 61% of obese boys and 63% of obese girls reported watching television for two or more hours each day.

According to the article, studies have also suggested that TV viewing habits in childhood can predict obesity risk in adulthood. It suggests that kids and teens should get at least one hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day at least three times a week to increase strength and develop strong muscles.

So where can kids and parents carve away time to do this in the typical weekday of an average kid?

Maybe families work together to establish play time during daylight hours, like making it a part of the schedule right off the bus or out of the office when energy is high. Or look for after school programs that are activity-centered.

It’s understandable that poor weather and concerns about safety can deter parents from letting their kids play outside, and not everyone has access to parks, gyms, or other safe and convenient places to exercise. One easy way to achieve the recommended guidelines indoors is to rethink how technology is being used inside the home.
